More Accurate Designs with GPU-Accelerated Transparency Mode

Order Independent Transparency (OIT) provides a “pixel-accurate” representation of the model and its surrounding geometry and is designed to be accelerated by the Radeon Pro GPU, enabling higher performance when compared to traditional blended mode. This creates a practical transparent 3D viewpoint for designers to continuously work within, helping improve the user’s sense of “design intuition” and aid in better decision-making throughout the product development stages.

Powered by Radeon Pro graphics solutions and technologies, BluePrint Automation (BPA) is able to effectively design state of the art packaging equipment for many household food brands.



Challenges

BPA designs and manufactures turnkey equipment for the food packaging industry using SOLIDWORKS® 2017. The 3D mechanical designs are highly complex and difficult to visualize for both BPA as well as its clients.



Solutions

BPA implemented the free Radeon ProRender and Radeon ProRender Game Engine Importer CAD-to-VR software solution in its production workflow powered by AMD Radeon Pro graphics.



Results

The ability to visualize complex CAD models in virtual reality at human scale is a major boon to productivity throughout BPA’s project lifecycles. VR allows BPA’s engineers to review key metrics such as ergonomics and serviceability, during the design phase. BPA’s clients are also able to provide feedback throughout the design cycle before any physical equipment is manufactured, contributing to massive time and cost saving. Finally, BPA now ships a VR capable workstation and a VR headset to industry events instead of shipping actual machinery. This allows BPA to demonstrate any number of equipment designs at a show, while saving tens of thousands of dollars in shipping and setup costs at each and every event.

The Radeon Pro WX 7100 and WX 9100, along with the accompanying free software solutions, enabled a brand new CAD-to-VR workflow which opened a new chapter in design interface with our customers. It will improve efficiency in our design review, ergonomics and user interface study while driving down engineering time and cost.
