AMD Threadripper 9000 Series Changes from Last Generation
The AMD Threadripper 9000 Series processors have a lot in common with the last generation. The SKU stack remains unchanged with the same core counts, base clocks, TDP, and L3 cache. But the AMD Threadripper 9000 Series has a couple of minor yet impactful changes compared to the last generation AMD Threadripper 7000.
- Zen 5 Architecture: Powered by the Zen 5 architecture, the Threadripper 9000 series has 22% better multi-threaded performance and 16% higher IPC efficiency for AI computation, engineering simulations, and scientific research.
- Increased per-core peak boost clocks: Clock speeds increased by 100-300MHz across all models. Despite this seemingly small change, the high core count in AMD Threadripper PRO and non-PRO processors translates to significant performance gains for multi-threaded workloads.
- Faster DDR5 Memory: Support upgraded from DDR5-5200 to DDR5-6400, delivering higher transfer rates and lower latency for memory-intensive tasks like 3D rendering, engineering, and scientific simulations.
- Increased PCIe Lanes: Upgraded from the Threadripper 7000X with only 48 PCIe 5.0 lanes, the Threadripper 9000X comes with 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes! New motherboards can fully support multi-GPU running at full bandwidth with options for additional I/O. For the Threadripper PRO 9000WX, the PCIe lanes remain at 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes (same as last generation).
